New Indonesian Survival Horror Game Akarmaut: Rootmare Announced

August 13, 2024 | Andreas Betsche

Indonesian game developer Agate, known for the Valthirian Arc series and Code Atma, has unveiled their latest project: Akarmaut: Rootmare, a survival horror game with an anime-inspired art style.

The game places four university students in a nightmarish scenario where their campus hospital has transformed into a labyrinth overrun by plant-zombie hybrids. Players must navigate this hostile environment while uncovering the truth behind the outbreak and fighting for survival.

According to the developers, the key features include:

  • A narrative-driven experience focusing on the complex relationships between the four main characters
  • Exploration of the infected campus to uncover secrets and clues
  • Survival gameplay against mutated creatures
  • Strategic resource management

The game’s visual style combines anime aesthetics with comic book elements, featuring atmospheric lighting and colourful monster designs. This approach sets it apart from traditional survival horror titles while drawing comparisons to the Resident Evil series due to its over-the-shoulder camera perspective.

Akarmaut: Rootmare is currently in development for PC and will be released on Steam. The release date and potential additional platforms have yet to be announced.

The game’s blend of survival horror and relationship-based narrative gameplay presents an intriguing concept. Questions remain about how the game will balance the tension typically associated with survival horror’s isolation against the more frequent character interactions proposed in the game. If this succeeds, we are confident that with Akarmaut: Rootmare, the studio can deliver a fresh take on the survival horror formula.
