Strife has no end in this new dystopian open world from Myanmar
A previously unknown studio from Myanmar recently announced their new game Yangon 2097 with an atmospheric trailer. So if you can’t get enough of dystopian cities after Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City, you should take a look at it.
UnknownBurma Games Studio (what a fitting name!) plans an action-adventure in which aliens have taken over Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, and all humans have been defeated. The futuristic city is intended to serve as the setting for an open world where we slip into the skin of the foreign occupiers. According to the developers, the game will feature action RPG elements as well as side activities.
Even if the game doesn’t have any references to current Myanmar, you can still see how some elements made it from the present to Yangon’s future. Most prominently, players will spot the outline of the famous Shwedagon Pagoda on the city’s horizon.

The studio, which currently consists of just two people, is developing Yangon 2097 with the help of Unreal Engine 4 and has big plans for the game. But first of all, a beta version for the PC should appear at the beginning of next year. Based on the player’s feedback, the game world should then be gradually expanded. Implementation for mobile devices is also planned.
UnknownBurma Games Studio is facing a big task, and it wouldn’t be the first time that a small indie studio might fail with over-ambition. However, we are cautiously optimistic and are initially happy to have discovered another game project from Myanmar. The future will tell if Yangon 2097 will meet the expectations of fans and developers. We will continue to cover the progress on Virtual SEA.
