Malaysia’s former Kickstarter hope Re:Legend finally leaves Early Access

After several postponements, it is now very close: the final version 1.0 of the former Kickstarter prodigy Re:Legend! Long awaited by fans, the co-op simulation RPG will now leave Early Access on Steam on September 6, 2022.

The Malaysian developer Magnus Games Studio landed a surprise success in August 2017 when around S$ 630,000 in donations were collected on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Re: Legend, the planned game, was even considered the most successful Kickstarter game from Southeast Asia at the time.

Plenty of advanced praise and trust for a relatively unknown game studio, but it showed that the game community longed for a game in the spirit of Stardew Valley and Pokémon.

About two years after the crowdfunding campaign, Re:Legend finally appeared, albeit only as an unfinished version in Steam’s Early Access program. Little did players expect that it would take another three years until the game was finished with the help of the publisher 505 Games.

In the meantime, it has become relatively quiet about Re:Legend, which, in addition to the long waiting time, is also due to the players’ disappointment, who only gave the game “mixed reviews” on Steam, stating that their product wouldn’t cater towards the high expectations.

The premise still sounds exciting: We explore the picturesque island of Vokka, where magical creatures called Magnus live, which we have to tame and care for. Just like in Pokémon, we can also let the little animals fight for us and, at the same time, have to take care of the well-being of the other villagers, having numerous activities such as farming, breeding, mining, logging, fishing, and crafting at our disposal.

It remains to be seen whether the final version of Re:Legend will bring back dissatisfied players and reach a new player base. In addition to a series of balance changes and bug fixes, this should primarily be ensured by new biomes, Magnusses, and weapons, with the game’s story also coming to an end. However, it remains questionable whether Re:Legend will also appear for consoles as promised because nothing more was heard of it.
