LEVEL UP KL Opens Virtual Doors Next Week

The time has come! Next week starts LEVEL UP KL, Southeast Asia’s premier industry event for game developers. Hosted by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and in cooperation with Kre8tif!, it is part of a month-long series of events bringing you the latest and greatest for animation and games from the Southeast Asian region. Like last year, this is a purely digital event, and we update you on everything happening at LEVEL UP KL!

The highlight of LEVEL UP KL is the SEA GAMES AWARDS, presented for the fifth time in a row. The most creative, artistic and technically impressive games from Southeast Asia will be honored. The selection process is currently underway and the award ceremony is scheduled for November 19, 2021. You can find out more about the SEA GAMES AWARDS here. We are already very excited to see which games will win this year!

The Business Connection Program (BCP), a B2B matchmaking and networking event, will take place next week, from September 13th to 17th, 2021, with the opportunity for members of the games industry to meet online for video meetings potential local and global business partners.

On September 14th, 2021, there will be a BLOCKCHAIN ​​BOOTCAMP, a one-day event that will update you on blockchain gaming, NFTs, Fintech, DeFi and play-to-earn. The ideal opportunity to deal with the latest boom trend in the game industry. Speakers include Ben Fairbank from RedFOX Labs and Gabby Dizon from Yield Guild Games; full agenda and speakers list here.

Things get particularly creative towards the end of the week with the SEA GAMES JAM, where Southeast Asian game developers create games on a specific topic within 48 hours. The winner game will be awarded a gift card totaling $ 500 and an official announcement during LEVEL UP KL.

At the INDUSTRY CONFERENCE, which will take place the following week, from 21 to 22 September, the crème de la crème of the Southeast Asian game industry finally comes together. It is joined by renowned speakers worldwide to exchange news from the games industry and give exciting talks. The topics range from insights into the Southeast Asian games market, team management, investment strategies, global IP partnership to handling the Unreal Engine 5. The program is framed by two contributions from the market giants Xbox and PlayStation. The entire conference program including all speakers can be found here.

Finally, the indies get the stage again. Southeast Asian game studios can pitch their ideas to publishers and investors at the INDIE PITCH, happening on September 23rd.

Andreas Betsche founded Virtual SEA in early 2016 after researching Cambodian mobile games for his Master’s thesis. He has a background in Southeast Asia studies and has worked and lived in Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Since he has been actively playing games since the early 90s, combing both worlds in Virtual SEA brought together both of his passions.
