Nullspace: A Retro-Futuristic RTS with Grand Ambitions

February 4, 2025 | Andreas Betsche

Nullspace is an upcoming real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Malaysian studio Kaigan Games, set in a retro-futuristic universe where humanity has spread across the stars.

The game promises a blend of large-scale space battles and direct squadron control, all while weaving a narrative about humanity’s struggle for survival and dominance. Players will command fleets, manage resources, and explore a cosmos shaped by warring human factions and the mysteries of an ancient alien artifact.

A Universe Forged in Conflict

The game’s premise involves humanity’s expansion into space, spurred by the discovery of a mysterious alien artifact, the Beacon, which unlocks faster-than-light (FTL) travel. This discovery leads to the formation of various factions, each with their ideologies and ambitions. The game features three main factions: the Junkers, resourceful scavengers living on the fringes of space; the Hegen, a militaristic faction valuing order and tradition; and the Dominion, visionaries driven by technological advancement. The conflict between these factions sets the stage for the game’s narrative and battles.

The developers at Kaigan Games aim to create a compelling universe, with the game’s setting approximately 200–300 years into the future. This allows for advanced space travel, with ships using a technology called a ‘soliton drive’ for FTL travel. The story begins with the discovery of a wormhole, or ‘blackfold’, created by an advanced alien civilisation, which leads humans to venture into the unknown. The game’s design emphasises a rugged, functional aesthetic for ships and technology, avoiding the sleek, futuristic look of some other space-based games.

The Gameplay Foundation

Nullspace aims to combine traditional RTS elements with innovative gameplay mechanics. Players will manage large fleets, ranging from small fighters to massive capital ships. Battles will take place in a fully 3D tactical environment, with players able to seamlessly transition between strategic fleet command and direct control of individual squadrons. This feature promises a unique blend of large-scale strategy and tactical micromanagement.

Resource management, base building, and technology research will be crucial for success. The game will feature diverse and dynamic environments, from asteroid fields to nebulae. Players can use these environments to their advantage, employing tactics such as using asteroids for cover or shattering them to create blinding dust clouds.

Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke: Nullspace is Hard Sci-fi

The game emphasises a narrative driven by compelling characters, exploring the triumphs and perils of a spacefaring civilisation. Nullspace is inspired by the “Golden Age of Sci-fi,” blending retro-futuristic aesthetics with deep existential themes. The game delves into themes of humanity’s place in the universe and the consequences of technological advancement. The story also draws inspiration from cosmic horror, exploring humanity’s confrontation with the unknown and the potential for incomprehensible forces.

Potential Black Holes

Despite its ambitions, we identified several key challenges for Kaigan Games to solve before the release. The developers (known for their found-phone horror series Simulacra) need to create a unique position in a competitive genre, where they have no prior experience. Strategic fleet command and direct squadron control are two gameplay mechanics who need to be effectively integrated to create a compelling single-player experience. It’s also important to balance the game’s hard sci-fi approach with engaging gameplay. Additionally, the developers must manage player expectations regarding the game’s release and content. Overcoming these hurdles will be vital for Nullspace to achieve its potential as a unique and engaging RTS title.

The Nullspace Chronicles

Nullspace presents itself as a unique entry into the RTS genre. It combines large-scale space battles with a focus on tactical detail and a compelling narrative. The game aims to delve into deeper themes and provide a retro-futuristic experience with a unique ‘found phone’ genre approach that the company has used successfully in the past. While its novel gameplay approach may be challenging for some, the game has a strong base in its setting and narrative. Whether it lives up to its ambitions remains to be seen when the game is released on Steam.
