Indie Jam 2025: A Gathering of Southeast Asian Games and Game Development

May 4, 2025 | Kenzie

As the Southeast Asian games industry continues to expand, various large events in the region have grown to champion the region’s games. While these occasions have the scale that reflects the global games industry, it’s equally exciting to have events that highlight the local community of games and game developers. Last weekend’s Indie Jam 2025 was full of this enterprising and inclusive spirit, inviting more people to have a look and experience what Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s games industry had to offer aspiring game developers and eager gamers.

Last April 26 and 27, The Magic Rain organized Indie Jam 2025, a free-entry event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event featured various activities and initiatives, ensuring there’s something for everyone – whether they attended onsite at the Xsolla Curine Academy, or checking out the online showcase. As the event was free-entry, it allowed not only games industry professionals, but also determined students, aspiring developers, games enthusiasts and curious visitors to know more about the industry.

Student Game Jam games were free to try out, where scholarships from the Xsolla Curine Academy were up for grabs for the jam projects judged as standouts.

Several games from all over Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines also presented their works in free-to-play demos and casual chats with the indie developers.

Talks by industry veterans and developers gave talks on a variety of topics, helping attendees have a more nuanced look at the blackbox that is the games industry and get the opportunity to ask questions.

In partnership with the International Game Developer’s Association (IGDA) representatives for Asia Pacific and Malaysia, a special edition of the Mentor’s Cafe program. Those who signed up for the activity got up close and professional with mentors who matched their requirements and portfolio.

The third edition of the Indie Jam 2025 garnered a 3,500-strong attendance and 45+ games showcase, according organizer Nathalie Tay of The Magic Rain. With its third edition a resounding confirmation of the growing interest in SEAn games and culture, it’s inspiring to see the growth of local events that focus on bringing the latest and greatest regionally-made games.
