WTF. Who came up with this background story? We’ll leave it here without comment for your enjoyment:

“Mr. Boulder is the “Fashionable” Champion of the Rock Kingdom. One day his collections of heroic Wonderpants got stolen by the jealous Empire of Scissor. Enraged, he storms the castle of Her Sharpness Empress Clipper and relentlessly crushes swarm of soldiers to get his Wonderpants back. With the help from Pebble, his trusty and always loyal sidekick, they will chase down Her Sharpness Empress Clipper to the end of the world. ”

So after we did that, on to the actual game: Rocky Rampage: Wreck ’em Up is an arcade game for mobile devices (Android and iOS) in which we try to launch our “hero” Mr. Boulder through a level at the most dizzying speed possible. He doesn’t run himself, but is rather catapulted through the air like a wrecking ball. He constantly loses speed and ultimately just comes to a stop like a rock. However, the goal is to get particularly far, or to defeat the final boss of each level by bumping into it.

To achieve this, there are different helpful elements in each level: Roll over opponents to gain jumping power, misuse flying bombs as catapults, or jump around the area on pink kangaroos – the developers really let off steam here. The great thing is that over time you can develop an extreme sense of speed by chaining up these “power-ups”, so that at best you can race through the level like a madman – unless you get slowed down by one of the horned guards or a protective wall.

Rocky Rampage: Wreck ’em Up is a free 2 play game and therefore some micro-transactions and advertisements must be expected. With the help of in-game currency, a variety of skills and perks can be improved, which are absolutely necessary to master the later levels. That sounds annoying, but we were able to clear the first available levels (more to come) without the use of real money. You earn enough coins every time you play the game, but it would have taken a lot longer without watching short advertising clips in between.

We had a lot of fun with Rocky Rampage. The scenario is wonderfully crazy, the 2D graphics are nice to look at and thanks to the good technology the game runs at a smooth pace which is necessary to enjoy the game at full. We were motivated to get faster and further through the game thanks to the upgrade mechanic and weren’t annoyed to do some grinding too: the gameplay is just thrilling enough! We recommend the game to everyone who likes some in-between high-speed action on their cell phones and is not put off by – fortunately rather harmless – F2P mechanics.

Rocky Rampage: Wreck ’em Up is available for free (F2P) on Android and iOS.
